A free license may not prohibit changing content or restrict commercial use. It can be copyleft or permissive.
There are free licenses for art/media and free licenses for software/source code.

Free licenses for art
- If you want to protect your art with a copyleft license, we recommend you to dual-license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 or any later version and the GPL 2.0 or any later version
- For trivial work, we recommend you release it to the public domain
The Definition of Free Cultural Works' license list provides a a range of licenses to choose from.
The following licenses (and combinations of them) are the most popular in the FreeGameDev community:
- Creative Commons Attribution, a permissive license
- Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike, a copyleft license
- GNU General Public License 2.0 and 3.0, copyleft licenses
About free licenses
Copyleft
A copyleft license requires derivate works to be licensed under the same license.
Permissive
A permissive license allows all kinds of use but can require attribution.
